The IWI Masada is a 9mm polymer, striker-fired pistol that provides a low bore axis, improved and adaptable ergonomics, fully ambidextrous controls, and an optics-ready slide, all at a reasonable price point. Its 4.1-inch button-rifled barrel and 17-round capacity make it an ideal size for those seeking a reliable duty weapon.
“Named after an ancient fortification, the Masada is everything you would expect from a modern carry/duty firearm. Roughly the same size profile as the Glock 19, this gun is good to go right from the box.” – David Lane
The VP9 is HK’s entry into striker-fired pistols. It’s reliable with great ergonomics and an incredibly clean trigger. The VP9 features a light, premium trigger, customizable grips, ambidextrous controls, an extended Picatinny rail, and an advanced striker-fired slide. Price on the VP9 is also quite reasonable – competitive with Glocks. The VP9 comes with different configurations, available in multiple colors and mag counts. The recent variants of the gun features optics-ready slides, a normal mag release button, and 17-round mags.
Many AR-9s are pushed to market as cheaper alternatives to more expensive pistol-caliber carbines, but not the Angstadt Arms UDP-9. Despite still being a direct-blowback firearm, these feature a much higher build quality with some excellent features like a flared magwell and last-round bolt hold open. If you are looking for a reliable and accurate PCC that has AR-like controls and uses common Glock magazines, this is a great option.
The Sig MPX-K utilizes a 4.5-inch carbon steel barrel to help bring the already maneuverable MPX into an even lighter, handier package. Additionally, the MPX-K features a reliable and durable gas-piston system to help that helps reduce recoil and aids in suppression. The MPX also has fully ambidextrous AR-style controls, a Timney flat-face trigger, and boasts modularity that allows users to easily change handguards and barrel lengths.
When it comes to value, the Hi-Point 995TS Carbine is hard to beat. Despite their modest price, they are 100% American-made and come with a full lifetime transferrable no-questions-asked warranty. These direct blowback carbines are simple, fun, and effective. Additionally, all Hi-Point carbines are rated for +P ammunition.
“With a flared mag well and a large mag release, reloads are quick and easy. The streamlined slide reduces muzzle flip and helps keep follow-on shots on target. CZ’s TS 2 is heavy but also a very appealing and purposefully designed competition pistol. While I know of others who have run their TS 2 without ever having an issue, the model we received did not like to shoot dirty — so a good cleaning is recommended when you take it out.”
Smith & Wesson’s Bodyguard 2.0 is a nice upgrade to the original Bodyguard, offering some nice features and an improved trigger. It’s super concealable, and .380 ACP is generally easy to source. While those with bigger hands might struggle to get a good grip, it does offer a design that is perfect for concealment.
Springfield Armory’s Hellion is a fresh take on the bullpup configuration, where the action is located behind the trigger. It features an overall length of just 28.25 inches while maintaining a 16” barrel. The Hellion also sports completely ambidextrous controls and a reversible case ejection system. The result is a 5.56 rifle that combines portability, performance, and user adjustability.
