When Sturm, Ruger & Co. bought Marlin in 2020, the haul included Marlin’s bygone subsidiaries.
One of those was Glenfield Firearms, and the budget-minded brand is back with a relaunch of the first-generation Ruger American. People at Ruger call it the Glenfield Model A, but I call it one of the more compelling bargains of 2025.
Here’s what you need to know about the brand, the rifle, and what might be on the horizon for potential customers like us.

Back in the 1960s and 1970s, Marlin needed a way to appeal to budget-conscious hunters without diluting the brand’s reputation for high-quality firearms. The answer was a subsidiary called Glenfield Firearms.

Basically, Glenfield sold Marlin rifles with spartan features more people could afford. For example, the Glenfield Model 30 was essentially a stripped-down Marlin Model 336.
The brand only lasted until the 1980s, but the concept is as solid as ever – maybe more so right now.

This time, Sturm, Ruger & Co. and Marlin are bringing back the Ruger American Gen I as the Glenfield Model A — and it’s still made in the U.S.
The bolt-action hunting rifle comes with a synthetic stock slathered in moss green splatter texture for grip in the field, a Picatinny rail for easy mounting of your favorite hunting scope, a threaded barrel for a suppressor, detachable magazines, and a trigger that’s adjustable from 3 to 5 pounds.

As of right now, cartridge offerings include .243 Win, 6.5 Creedmoor, .270 Win, .30-06 Sprg, .308 Win, .350 Legend, and .450 Bushmaster. That’s a nice selection of classic Americana and support for hunters in states that limit them to straight-walled cartridges.
How about that value proposition?
Right now, the entry-level Ruger American Gen II Standard has an MSRP of $729. By stepping back in time to the Gen I platform that punched tags for 14 years and sold nearly 2 million rifles, you’ll find an MSRP of $499 and retail prices even lower than that.

“We’re excited to bring back the iconic Glenfield Firearms brand with a new product that reflects Ruger’s dedication to manufacturing affordable, American-made firearms for any and every hunter,” Todd Seyfert, president and CEO of Ruger, said in a company statement. “The Model A is a practical, reliable rifle built for hunters of all experience levels and we’re proud to bring it to market under the Glenfield name.”
Glenfield Firearms lists an MSRP of $499 for the Model A.
