Editor’s Note:

The SD9VE was Smith & Wesson’s first major success in the striker-fired, polymer pistol market. Modeled off of their previous Sigma lineup, the SD9VE set out to provide a reliable, robust, but affordable alternative to competitors like Glock. These guns feature a 4-inch stainless steel barrel, 16-round magazine capacity, three-dot sights, a Picatinny rail, and sport a distinctive two-tone finish.

By The Numbers - Smith & Wesson SD9VE

Accuracy
Accuracy is solid for a pistol of its size. The horrible 8 pound trigger will put pressure on the shooter to get good groups.
Reliability
Excellent reliability is probably the best selling point of this gun.
Customization
There are a few aftermarket sights, and the Picatinny rail allows for attachments. Not much else is out there for this aging platform.
Ergonomics
The gun feels surprisingly good in the hand and the 1911-style grip angle makes for a natural pointing gun.
Overall
It was originally marketed as reliable and cheap, but these days, there are ton of similar guns that fall under that category, even from Smith & Wesson themselves. The abysmal trigger holds this back from still being relevant.

Glock 19

Glock 19 is the most proven compact semi-automatic handgun on the market today. Chambered in 9mm Luger, the Glock 19 is a versatile compact version of the standard Glock option.  It’s great for use as a backup weapon, concealed carry, or service pistol.  The Gen 5 in particular has made some great improvements which include an ambidextrous slide stop lever, flared mag-well, and upgraded barrel design, just to name a few. The G19 has been a favorite amongst police agencies and military units and for good reasons. This gun is simple to operate and easy to maintain, making it a great first gun, CCW, or home defense weapon.

Smith & Wesson SD9VE Upgrades & Accessories

final verdict

The SD9VE set out to bring an affordable, reliable, striker-fired gun to the market. It did that, but that was over 10 years ago. Reliable striker pistols have become commonplace in the last five years. With guns like the Beretta APX A1, CZ P-10C, and offerings from Canik hovering around the $300 mark, the time of the SD9VE is over. While it remains reliable, the trigger is absolutely abysmal, and the aftermarket is slim. If you have one, it will serve you well, but as of 2023, other guns will serve you better for the same or less money.
