The Browning A5 is a riff on Browning’s original Auto-5 shotgun. It has been modernized and now features an inertia-driven operation system rather than the original’s long-recoil operation. These shotguns retain the humpback receiver for that classic look and are threaded for Invector chokes. Also present is Browning’s Speed Load Plus system that automatically loads the shell loaded into the magazine tube instead of forcing the user to load through the ejection port. The A5 is a reliable, robust shotgun while maintaining that classic styling.

final verdict
Shotgun designs tend to stay relevant longer than just about anything except maybe bolt-actions, but even they have an expiration date. While the A5 doesn’t have the rich history of its cool long-recoil ancestor, the Auto-5, it is still cool in its own right. Using a newer inertia-driven operation system, the A5 is lighter, softer shooting, and more reliable. While Browning claims the presence of the old-style humpback receiver is to help with sight alignment, I think we all know it was to keep the gun looking old-school and retain the ability to still name it something close to the original. It may not be as much of a conversation starter as its predecessor, but the A5 is a slim, well-thought-out shotgun that still oozes style and is a worthy successor.
