So you’ve gotten your concealed carry…now it’s time to think about protecting yourself in case of an actual self-defense incident.
And if you’ve done any research at all, you’ve already come across the same usual suspects like CCW Safe, USCCA, or Right to Bear.
But there’s a newer player that’s been making serious noise in the 2A community: Attorneys On Retainer (AOR), powered by the Attorneys For Freedom (AFF), an Arizona-based law firm with a national self-defense practice.
The big difference?
Unlike the insurance-backed programs, you’re literally hiring a law firm…not buying an insurance policy. And to make it even better, they are the only self-defense exclusive law firm in the nation.
That means attorney-client privilege, coverage decisions made by actual lawyers, round-the-clock support, and far fewer exclusions compared to other policies that could leave you hanging when you need help most.
I’ll break down what AOR covers, how the pricing stacks up, and whether it’s actually worth the premium price tag over the other guys.

Attorneys On Retainer Plans & Pricing
Let’s get started with their simple plan structure…choose individual or family…that’s it.

Here it is summarized in a table:
| Plan | Monthly | Annual | One-Time Fee | Best For |
| Individual | $37/month | $390/year | $100 | Solo carry |
| Family (per person) | $29/month | $306/year/person | $75 | Families |
There’s also a one-time $100 non-refundable sign-up fee…but use code PEWPEW25 for $25 off.
It’s not the cheapest out there but I’ll go through why it would still make sense for many.
What is Attorneys On Retainer?
Attorneys On Retainer is a legal defense membership run by the Attorneys For Freedom Law Firm, founded by Marc J. Victor, a Marine Corps veteran and criminal defense attorney who has spent 30+ years in courtrooms handling major felony and self-defense cases.

The core idea is different from every other CCW coverage program out there: you’re not buying insurance.
You’re becoming a client of an actual law firm.
That distinction matters a lot.
With others, your coverage is governed by an insurance policy.
Insurance companies have adjusters and exclusions…with AOR, you’re a client the moment you join.
And there’s 3 simple criteria to ensure coverage:
- You are charged or reasonably concerned about being charged with a crime.
- You can reasonably and in good faith assert that you acted in self-defense of yourself or defense of others.
- The charges arise out of conduct that occurred entirely after you became a member.

And for the nitty gritty…The program is structured in three parts:
- You become a client of the Attorneys For Freedom Law Firm based in AZ with full attorney-client privilege
- You become an affiliate member of the AOR Association (education, newsletters, legal advocacy)
- You’re covered by AFF-RRG, Inc., a special entity that handles civil liability, red flag, expungement, and more
Why Trust Us
Hi, I’m Eric Hung, and I’m the founder of Pew Pew Tactical. I’ve written hundreds of firearm articles that are read millions of times each month.

I’m a daily concealed carrier, husband, father of two girls, and occasional CQB larper.
And I’m also a licensed insurance agent in 48 states that specializes in concealed carry and defense products.
I’m able to bring you much more than numbers and legal jargon…but also how and why they could affect you.
What Does AOR Cover?
Criminal Defense
If you’re charged with a felony or misdemeanor arising from a self-defense incident, AOR will represent you if you “reasonably and in good faith assert self-defense or defense of a third party.
And that decision is made by a lawyer, not someone from an insurance firm.

Four trial attorneys are assigned to every felony case. They cover all attorney fees, expert witnesses, investigators, court costs, travel, and pro hac vice fees (fee for out-of-state attorneys to appear in your jurisdiction) so your AFF attorney can represent you in any state.
Also different from other plans is that AOR will cover you even if:
- You were in a gun-free zone
- Your CCW permit was expired or invalid (in a non-constitutional carry state)
- You were impaired by drugs or alcohol
- You’re a prohibited possessor
- You used an illegal weapon
- The incident involved a negligent discharge during the act of self-defense
- You take a plea deal
- It’s deemed a domestic violence situation
Civil Defense
AOR will represent you if you’re sued in civil court after a self-defense incident. That includes attorney fees, expenses, pro hac vice costs, and travel.
Civil coverage is included with both plans and not an add-on or more expensive plan.
Other Coverage
- Bail bond: up to $50,000 toward a secure bond (up to $500k posted value) or $50k cash-only bond
- Firearm replacement: $1,000 if your firearm is confiscated
- Scene cleanup: $4,000
- Mental health counseling: up to 10 sessions ($1,500)
- Red flag / ERPO proceedings
- Record sealing & expungement
- Retrial coverage
- Victim advocate representation
Plus Attorneys On Retainer is available in all 50 states while almost all other plans have restrictions in some states like New Jersey, New York, or Washington…but not AOR because they are a law-firm retainer and not an insurance product.

Attorney-Client Privilege
This is the thing that doesn’t get talked about enough so I made it a separate section.
When you call other programs after an incident, you’re talking to non-attorney staff.
Those conversations are NOT protected by attorney-client privilege. They can be subpoenaed. That could become a real problem if your case ever goes to trial.

With AOR, your 24/7/365 emergency hotline connects you directly to a trial attorney on your legal team. Everything said is protected.
Does it matter for most people who never have to use their coverage? Probably not. But if you actually need it, that distinction could be the difference between winning and losing your case.
What Does Attorneys On Retainer NOT Cover?
The training gap is real…if you’re also looking for CCW education, videos, and community, USCCA and CCW Safe still win that category handily.

If you live in any state outside of Arizona, your AFF attorney will be able to represent you via pro hac vice (which allows an out-of-state attorney to practice in your state for that specific case) or send local counsel, working in collaboration with Attorneys For Freedom.
The local counsel may be selected either by you, or through the Attorneys For Freedom, who maintain a network of experienced and vetted attorneys.
Who Should Get AOR?
You should strongly consider Attorneys On Retainer if: you prefer a legal defense model that isn’t tied to an insurance policy or exclusions, you live in New Jersey/New York/Washington, you’re in a higher-risk profession (security, armed guard, etc.), or you’ve already got training covered elsewhere.
Remember to use code PEWPEW25 for $25 off the $100 one-time sign-up fee.

Stick with others: you want training content bundled into your membership, you’re on a tighter budget, or you’re comfortable with the insurance-backed model and the coverage limits it provides.
