How We Chose the Best Magpul Stocks

Mil-Spec and Magpul MOE Buttstocks
Some of our Magpul stocks now feature high-performance spray paint.

Best Magpul Stocks

1. Magpul CTR - Best Overall

Best Overall
Magpul CTR Stock

Pros

  • Friction lock reduces wobble
  • Integrated QD sling points
  • Lightweight

Cons

  • Not as solid of a cheek weld

Specs

  • Platform: AR15, M4, M16, AR10, M110, SR25
  • Adjustable Length of Pull: Yes
  • Adjustable Comb Height: Yes
  • Colors: Black, gray, FDE, OD green
  • Country of Origin: USA

Carbines are meant to be lightweight, compact, easy to use, and simple. With this in mind, the Magpul CTR has long been the dominant carbine stock.

Magpul Experience GBRS gun
Shooting with a Magpul CTR stock - and lots of other fancy gear.

It’s been seen in the hands of a number of military and police personnel, including elite operators within the SEAL, Raider, and Green Beret communities.

With the CTR, you get the classic six-position carbine stock. It's similar to the old M4 stock, but Magpul reduced weight with an A-frame design and moved the adjustment latch inside to prevent any kind of accidental release or extension.

The CTR also has a QD socket for slings and a pair of 1.25-inch sling points. The cheek weld isn't exactly luxurious, but it's better than the M4 stock.

The friction lock really reduces wobble. This helps keep the stock stable when you get a cheek weld for more accurate shots.

The Magpul CTR stock doesn't stand out as the best stock for precision shooting, the most compact stock, or any other award for being the best in any specific category. The CTR stands out because it's a jack of all trades.

It's well made, compact, tight, light, and easy to use just like the AR-15!

2. Magpul MOE SL-K - Best Budget

Best Budget

Pros

  • Good cheek weld
  • Lightweight
  • Small form factor

Cons

  • No QD sling mounts

Specs

  • Platform: AR15, M4, M16, AR10, M110, SR25
  • Adjustable Length of Pull: Yes
  • Adjustable Comb Height: No
  • Colors: Black, gray, FDE, OD green
  • Country of Origin: USA

The MOE SL-K has captured not only my heart but the heart of shooters worldwide. It's the compact version of the MOE SL, and it's Magpul's lightest and shortest AR-15 stock. It's also super affordable!

Magpul MOE SL Stock
The SL-K is smaller than the SL model (pictured above).

At only 7.9 ounces and 6.5 inches, it fits well with your smallest, lightest carbines. While it might be a small stock, the design isn't slacking by any means.

Most PDW stocks don't offer much on the cheek weld or support front. The MOE SL-K is an exception: it provides a supportive cheek weld with the Magpul slope and a beard-friendly design.

Magpul SL-K (Photo: Magpul)

At the rear of the stock, there's a slot for 1.25-inch webbing, but you can also attach a QD mount. You’ll also find a Magpul buttpad and shape that's famous for its ability to cling to your shoulder but also easily roll for a shoulder swap.

Most PDW stocks offer limited control and support, but the Magpul MOE SL-K provides that rock-solid support while remaining light and handy.

3. Magpul ACS - Best Internal Storage

Best Internal Storage
Magpul ACS

Pros

  • Superb cheek weld
  • Good battery storage
  • Beard-friendly

Cons

  • Thicker stock may interfere with plate carriers

Specs

  • Platform: AR15, M4, M16, AR10, M110, SR25
  • Adjustable Length of Pull: Yes
  • Adjustable Comb Height: No
  • Colors: Black, gray, FDE, OD green
  • Country of Origin: USA

I'm not the type to like minimalist stocks, and as a thick boi, I can appreciate thick stocks that provide ample support. That's why I prefer a stock like the ACS. The big fat cheek weld greets my face (and beard) like an old friend.

Magpul ACS

I enjoy the increased comfort, especially when used with LPVOs or other magnified optics. That's not the main draw to the ACS stock, though.

The ACS stock is basically a backpack for your rifle. Sure, it's a great stock, but it also offers a lot of room to store all your goodies.

And by "goodies," I mean mission essentials like batteries. You can fit six CR123 batteries into the stock. Another compartment gives you room for in-ear hearing protection, small tools, and much more.

With the ACS stock, you get more storage options than most, but you pay a cost for it. That cost is sling points. You get one, and you dang sure better like it.

4. Magpul SGA - Best Shotgun Stock

Best Shotgun Stock
Magpul SGA

Pros

  • Adjustable length of pull
  • Multiple cheek riser heights
  • Improved grip angle

Cons

  • Only compatible with Remington 870 and Mossberg 500/590 shotguns

Specs

  • Platform: Mossberg 500, Mossberg 590, Mossberg 590A1, Remington 870
  • Adjustable Length of Pull: Yes
  • Adjustable Comb Height: Yes
  • Colors: Black, gray, orange, FDE
  • Country of Origin: USA

The Magpul SGA is a rock-solid shotgun stock that's easy to fit individual shooters, easy to use with common accessories, and plenty comfy for high-round-count training days.

Magpul SGA Stock
Magpul SGA. (Photo: Magpul)

This affixed stock offers a traditional design like something you'd see on most shotguns. That's how it appears, anyway.

The stock combines the benefits of a pistol grip and a traditional stock.

With a very pronounced pistol grip, you can easily hold the gun up with a single hand and keep it oriented downrange. It provides a great grip if you prefer the old push/pull for recoil reduction.

5.11 Shotgun holder
Get ergonomics like this, but without spending Benelli money.

Magpul designed the stock to use a series of inserts to adjust the length of pull for individual shooters.

On top of that, the stock features a series of sling points, and you can easily add a sight riser to use various height optics.

A supportive recoil pad tops everything off to keep the shooting experience comfy. Magpul blew the world away with the SGA stock, and I hope they extend the stock to fit a wider variety of shotguns.

Remington 870

Right now, they only make them for the Remington 870 and Mossberg 500/590 series of shotguns. I want the SGA on every shotgun I own, from the Benelli M4 to the Ithaca 37.

5. Magpul Zhukov - Best AK Stock

Best AK Stock
Magpul Zhukov-S

Pros

  • Adjustable length of pull
  • Easy to add a cheek riser
  • Right-side folding doesn't interfere with side-mounted optics
  • QD sling point

Cons

  • Stock adjustment can be stiff

Specs

  • Platform: AK, AKM
  • Adjustable Length of Pull: Yes
  • Adjustable Comb Height: Yes
  • Colors: Black, FDE, plum
  • Country of Origin: USA

When Magpul released the Zhukov, it made a lot of AK stocks obsolete -- and you don't have to convert to an AR-style setup.

Zhukov Buttstock
Magpul Zhukov-S.

The Zhukov, named after the Russian Field Marshal of WWII fame, delivers one of the most modern AK stocks out there. If you're a traditionalist, look the other way.

The Zhukov takes advantage of the AK design with a folding capability, and gives you the ability to change the length of pull with the press of a button. If you're using one of the AK's famed side-mounted optics, you'll be happy to hear it folds to the right.

The Magpul Zhukov is a lot more practical than this stock.

Tossing a sling on your AK isn't always easy, but the Zhukov cleans things up a fair bit. You have the option for a typical 1.25-inch sling or a QD point for a more modern option.

The stock locks in place easily and provides a stable platform for taking accurate shots. A little support goes a long way, and the cheek rest is fantastic. You can even add an optional riser to the Zhukov for using those high-sitting AK optics.

Zhukov
Magpul couldn't have picked a cooler name.

Magpul's Zhukov stock allows your AK to take on some modern flair and ergonomics. It's well worth the cost and even comes in a fun plum color.

Your favorite stock company didn't forget about traditional rifles -- check out the Magpul Hunter!

Magpul Hunter Savage 110

With this family of stocks, Magpul embraces the Remington 700, Ruger American, Ruger 10/22, Savage 110, and Savage Axis rifles.

These stocks use the same high-performance polymer design we've come to expect from Magpul. They incorporate several M-LOK slots on the sides and bottom of the stock so you can mount accessories like a bipod or weapon-mounted rangefinder.

Magpul uses a strong bedding block to keep your rifle as accurate as possible.

At the rear, we see a similar design to the Magpul SGA. This includes an ergonomic, aggressive pistol grip paired with an adjustable length of pull via removable inserts.

It's lightweight, available in a wide variety of colors, and is just waiting to be rattle-canned.

7. Magpul PRS - Best Precision Stock

Best Precision Stock
Magpul PRS Gen3

Pros

  • Adjustable length of pull
  • Adjustable cheek riser
  • Extremely precise adjustments

Cons

  • Long even in its shortest configuration
  • Expensive

Specs

  • Platform: AR15, M4, M16, AR10, M110, SR25
  • Adjustable Length of Pull: Yes
  • Adjustable Comb Height: Yes
  • Colors: Black, gray, FDE, OD green
  • Country of Origin: USA

If you consider yourself a precision rifleman with an AR-pattern rifle, then the Magpul PRS is likely on your radar.

Magpul PRS
Magpul PRS.

PRS stands for Precision Rifle/Sniper, and it's currently in its third generation. A PRS stock is designed to give you the best shooting position possible and provides an extremely ergonomic platform.

Plus, it's Magpul, so we know we are getting a durable, well-made, and lightweight rifle stock.

Magpul PRS

Magpul designed the rubber butt pad of the PRS Gen 3 to be adjustable for both cant and height to maximize its contact with your shoulder. With all generations, we get an adjustable length of pull and adjustable comb height.

Unlike a carbine stock, these adjustments are incredibly precise and stable, allowing a precision shooter to adjust the stock for their needs.

At the bottom of the Gen 3 stock sits two M-LOK slots for adding a monopod for those real precise shots. The Gen 2 variants have threaded inserts with a 10-32 thread pattern for monopods.

Of course, you have a few sling points for keeping things secure and stable when you aren't prone. These are some of the best rifle stocks on the planet for precision shooting, and unlike other options, they won't cost half as much as your rifle.

8. Magpul MOE - Best Fixed AR Stock

Best Fixed AR Stock
Magpul MOE

Pros

  • Slim and simple
  • Integrated QD sling points
  • Rear storage compartment

Cons

  • Fixed length of pull may not be for everyone

Specs

  • Platform: AR15, M4, M16, AR10, M110, SR25
  • Adjustable Length of Pull: No
  • Adjustable Comb Height: No
  • Colors: Black, gray, FDE, OD green
  • Country of Origin: USA

Everyone loves carbines until they experience the joy of a rifle with a 20-inch barrel, a rifle-length gas system, and a fixed stock like the Magpul MOE.

Magpul Moe Rifle Stock
Magpul MOE.

This A2-style fixed stock features a long length of pull; the same as an M4 carbine stock fully extended. It's just right for most shooters, and the LOP sits at 13.5 inches.

Magpul ensured the cheek weld was extensive and allowed you to button down and get behind your sights and optics. It's my choice on my Aero M16 clone, although it's clearly not really a clone anymore. It's better.

Magpul MOE. (Photo: Magpul)

Beyond the awesome comfort and perfect LOP, Magpul did the Magpul thing and provided plenty of sling points to make sure your rifle remains supported and comfy.

The rear of the stock opens, and there is a massive compartment for storing batteries, cleaning kits, tools, skittles, and whatever else you could ever want.

It's like this, only better.

Fixed stocks aren't a favorite for everyone, but the Magpul MOE is the way to go if you need a true rifle stock.

Pros

  • Tons of ammo storage
  • Highly adjustable
  • More durable than wood

Cons

  • Only compatible with a few models

Specs

  • Platform: Marlin 1895, Marlin 1894, Marlin 336
  • Adjustable Length of Pull: Yes
  • Adjustable Comb Height: Yes
  • Colors: Black, FDE, OD green
  • Country of Origin: USA

Hang on just a minute! Magpul didn't forget about lever guns, and neither did we. Bring your cowboy rifle into the modern age with the Magpul ELG.

Magpul ELG. (Photo: Magpul)

While we haven't gotten our hands on one of these yet, Magpul's track record leads us to believe it's a huge upgrade over traditional wood stocks -- in terms of practicality, at least.

And yes, there's an M-LOK handguard to match!

The ELG is adjustable for length of pull and comb height. That's always nice, and it's especially handy if you use an optic because they sit considerably higher than your rifle's iron sights.

Check out that hidden compartment! (Photo: Magpul)

It also has a bunch of secure storage for ammunition. Again, someone at Magpul was thinking about lever-gun owners who have to deal with limited magazine capacity and slower reloads compared to rifles with detachable magazines.

Right now, it only fits a few Marlin rifles. Will that change? We'll have to wait and see.

How to Pick the Best Magpul Stock

Ready to buy a sweet Magpul stock to upgrade one of the guns in your collection? Here's what you need to know before you swipe that credit card.

Firearm Compatibility

First, figure out what you want to upgrade. Magpul stocks are compatible with specific firearms.

9. Best Duty Weapons Remington 870
Look for a Magpul stock that fits your specific firearm, like this Remington 870.

Once you know the platform you're dealing with (AR-15, AK, Remington 870, Marlin 336, etc.) you can see what Magpul offers. And yes, Magpul supports all of those!

Adjustable Stocks

One of the main reasons people buy Magpul stocks is to get more adjustability than your factory stock offers.

Ruger Precision Rimfire prone shoot right
Adjustable stocks are extra helpful on precision rifles like this Ruger Precision Rimfire.

Want to customize length of pull or comb height for a personalized fit? Look for a Magpul stock with those features. If that's not a priority, you have even more options.

Weight

Weight is another consideration. If you're building a precision or DMR-style rifle, adding weight is an advantage.

This Magpul CTR stock improves performance without adding a bunch of weight.

If you're dealing with a lightweight AR-15, keeping the stock light as well is key.
