Palmetto State Armory released the Guardsman line in the hopes of tempting shooters who wanted something upgraded, but didn’t want to pay for their Sabre series. With upgraded components and features, priced not much more than their budget offerings, does the Guardsman still represent good value?

PSA sent us one out to learn for ourselves, and I can tell you, the performance was good. But in order to learn whether the Guardsman is a solid value for you, we’ll need to delve into components, features, and performance.

PSA Guardsman-15 shoot right

As a former law enforcement firearms instructor and long-time gun reviewer, I put over 500 rounds through the Guardsman 15 in a hands-on test that should help you decide if it’s right for you.

TL;DR: The Guardsman 15 is a midline model that provides good performance using upgraded components and features. It’s not much more expensive than the base PA 15, but it represents an excellent value for the customer who wants something a little nicer without having to upgrade the rifle themselves.

By the Numbers

Reliability: 10/10

Shooting a variety of ammunition brands and weights, we fired 500 rounds through the Guardsman 15 and experienced zero malfunctions.

Ergonomics: 8/10

With a Magpul PR stock, MOE grip, and a mix of upgraded and stock controls, the Guardsman 15 scores well overall in ergonomics, with only a few detractors.

Accuracy: 8/10

Across four brands of ammunition, the Guardsman 15 averaged around 1.5”, with the best group (Speer 55gr) measuring 1.25”. The Guardsman did not favor 77gr Nosler, which grouped just over 3”.

Customization: 9/10

AR-15s are some of the most customizable firearms on the planet and enjoy enormous aftermarket support. The Guardsman 15 already comes somewhat customized, but you could still swap anything you like (charging handle).

Value: 8/10

With upgraded furniture and components, the Guardsman represents a good midline value at the price of $650, a better value when compared to the similar Sport 3 from Smith & Wesson.

Overall: 8.6/10

How I Tested the PSA Guardsman 15

The Guardsman 15 model we received from PSA has a 16” barrel, which places it in the general-purpose category in my mind. However, PSA included a Magpul MOE PR stock, a choice lending itself more to longer-distance shooting without the specialization of a PRS stock.

While the build implies a precision-lean setup, it isn’t as dedicated as one with an adjustable cheek riser. This helped me dial in the testing to shooting from various positions and distances, using paper targets for accuracy and steel targets for hit confirmation.

My goal was to test the PSA Guardsman 15 using the same criteria I apply to all firearms, particularly AR-15s. This better enables me to contrast and compare the performance displayed.

Round Count & Reliability Testing

I fired just over 500 rounds through the Guardsman 15, the bulk of which was AAC 55gr FMJ. During accuracy testing, I also used Speer Gold Dot 55gr (duty), Nosler ASP 77gr HPBT (match), and Federal Premium Sierra MatchKing 69gr PTHP (match).

PSA Guardsman-15 reload

During the course of the test, the Guardsman 15 experienced zero malfunctions whether firing, feeding, extracting, or ejecting. I also utilized multiple generations of Magpul magazines, Lancer, MFT, and Hexmag.

Accuracy Testing

Because the Guardsman 15 I tested comes equipped with a 16” 4150V chrome moly vanadium steel barrel and a PR stock from Magpul, it seemed fitting to mount a magnified optic and test accuracy. I chose a Primary Arms GLx 4-16x50 FFP, mounted it, and fired 5-shot groups using ammunition from four different brands and weights using a CTK Precision P3 Ultimate Gun Vise, shooting from the prone position at 100 yards.

PSA Guardsman-15 accuracy

After accuracy was complete, I mounted a Vortex Crossfire II (tan, please) and ran various drills, shooting steel targets from varying distances and shooting positions such as kneeling, seated, prone, supported (tree), and left-handed. I used a variety of commonly available magazines to check functionality and noted the weather was mostly clear and sunny, with temperatures in the 70s.

PSA Guardsman 15: Accuracy & Reliability

With the PA 4-16x50 mounted on the Guardsman 15, I set it in the rifle rest and fired 5-shot groups at 100 yards from the prone position. All groups averaged around 1.5”, but the heavier 69gr Federal was just over 3”.

Federal Premium BTHP69gr1.56"
Nosler BTHP77gr3.3"
Speer Gold Dot55gr1.25"

Although the Guardsman 15 seemed to prefer 55gr ammo, it also did well with the 69gr Federal. This group would have been around 1” but I dropped one round. Regardless, the accuracy is well below the military standard of 4-5 MOA.

The flat face bow of the Guardsman single-stage trigger was nice, and I appreciated the crisp break after perhaps a millimeter of movement. An upgraded trigger can definitely impact overall accuracy, and I found this to be the case with the Guardsman 15.

Interestingly, the rifle isn't so specialized that it can’t shine in other categories. After switching to the Vortex Crossfire II red dot, I ran drills for speed at closer distances.

Shooting impulse was controllable, and I was able to fire many shots in a row at close distances without losing accuracy. However, I was able to speed up enough that recoil became an issue and I’d run off target.

Here, the single-stage trigger was great. The short reset allowed me to get back on and fire quickly.

Reliability was measured at the end of the 500-round test. Despite shooting from multiple positions, using a wide variety of magazines and four different types of ammunition, the Guardsman 15 had zero malfunctions.

I appreciated the versatility evident in the rifle. It’s not a bolt-action rifle, but it has good accuracy. It’s also not an SBR but handles itself well in the carbine category.

Finally, small details show a dedication to higher quality in the Guardsman 15. The bolt carrier group is nicely spec’d, and both the gas key and castle nut are well staked.

PSA Guardsman 15 Ergonomics: Fit & Feel

While the PR stock implies precision shooting, it falls into a category just slightly more specialized than a general carbine stock. This means you can use the Guardsman 15 for a number of purposes.

PSA Guardsman-15 rail

The rail features MLOK at 3, 6, and 9 o’clock, but also has extra slots at 1:30 and 10:30 near the A2 muzzle device. The lockup is very good, and there are anti-rotation tabs present that prevent the forend from twisting on the receiver.

Grip

PSA includes the Magpul MOE grip on the Guardsman 15. I like the overall size and the grip texture is a happy medium.

The grip angle is a more traditional 25 degrees AR shooters are accustomed to. Plus, there’s an added bonus of a storage compartment for batteries or other small accessories within the grip.

Trigger

The Guardsman single-stage trigger is a definitive upgrade from a milspec trigger. The flat face bow is skeletonized and has a tiny lip at the bottom for indexing and retention.

PSA Guardsman-15 trigger

Pressing back, the trigger moved perhaps a millimeter before building tension resulted in a clean break averaging 4 pounds on a Lyman Digital gauge. Reset was very strong, pushing the bow forward with a very tactile and audible click.

Stock

PSA included the Magpul MOE PR stock from Magpul on the Guardsman 15. This stock leans toward precision rifle shooting without being fully committed.

Though there is no adjustable cheek riser, compatible CTR risers can be added. Length of pull can be adjusted between six different positions.

Controls

Fire controls are ambidextrous on the Guardsman 15. While I don’t typically prefer this, they are a bit larger than standard and have good tactility. The slightly smaller right-side lever is a welcome addition.

PSA Guardsman-15 controls

Two items PSA left stock are the magazine release and charging handle. The latter is an anemic but effective means for running your bolt.

PSA Guardsman 15 Downsides

As mentioned above, the charging handle is mil-spec. It works, but there are so many better options out there.

I suspect this may be the very crux of the matter. Because people have so many choices in charging handles and not many may agree on the best upgrade, it’s better to let people pick their own.

Notably, there are no QD points on the Guardsman 15, either on the rail or on the PR stock.

Who Should Buy the PSA Guardsman 15

The Guardsman 15 represents solid value and is a step up from your base-model AR-15. With upgraded features and components, you can expect a little better performance and comfort.

This should appeal to anyone who wants something a little better than the run-of-the-mill rifles out there. More importantly, it should really appeal to people who aren’t into handling their own upgrades.

While the Guardsman 15 is partially optimized for precision shooting, it’s versatile enough to serve just about any defensive or recreational role.

Final Verdict

I like the theme of the Guardsman 15. The FDE color scheme looks great and adds aesthetic value to the rifle.

Even if you don’t care for the peanut butter drip, the upgraded features work well together. The accuracy, reliability, and comfort of shooting this rifle are a step above those of the base-model AR-15s so common on the market.

The Guardsman 15 may be configured toward precision, but it's versatile enough to serve in most roles. It’s a great value for those who want something just a little bit nicer.
