As much as we love carbine-length AR-15s and conventional handguns, sometimes splitting the difference makes a lot of sense.

The people at Springfield must agree, because they just dropped the Springfield Saint Victor PDW. This new firearm offers many of the advantages of an AR-15, but in a package that’s small enough to pull duty as a truck gun or backpack gun. I think it would make a lot of sense in a quick-access safe under the bed as a home-defense gun, too.

Here’s everything I know so far.

This new PDW joins a big family of Saint Victor AR-15s that includes rifles, pistols, and PCCs.

At the heart of the Saint Victor PDW is the same general architecture. The upper and lower receivers are made from forged 7075-T6 aluminum with hardcoat anodizing in tungsten gray. As with the other variants, this one uses Springfield’s Accutite system to get a perfect fit with no play between the upper and lower.

Saint Victor PDW or Kuna -- which are you picking?

The blowback action may not feel as refined as delayed blowback (which you get in the Springfield Kuna), but it’s simpler, more affordable, and very reliable.

Instead of the conventional brace that comes on Saint Victor pistols, the PDW comes with a three-position adjustable SB Tactical HBPDW brace. This compact brace suits the 5.5-inch barrel and overall aesthetic much better, if you ask me.

Other up-spec features include an aluminum M-LOK handguard, B5 Systems Type 23 P-Grip, short-throw ambidextrous safety, and flat-faced trigger.

The threaded barrel comes with Springfield’s Muzzle Drum blast diverter, but this PDW is just begging for a compact suppressor like the Banish 9K.

Ammo comes from a 32-round, Colt-pattern stick magazine, and one is included with the PDW.

All in all, this looks like another feature-rich way to get an AR-15 that’s ready to rock right out of the box. Add an optic and a light, and you’re in business.

Springfield lists an MSRP of $1,399 for the Saint Victor PDW.

Springfield Armory Saint Victor PCC
Springfield Armory Saint Victor PCC and Speer Gold Dot for the win.

I’ve put a bunch of rounds through the full-length Saint Victor PCC, which is one of my go-to test mules for things like AR-15 optics, AR-15 flashlights, and 9mm ammo testing.

It’s been an absolute runner, so I have high expectations for this PDW -- especially with 32 rounds of Speer Gold Dot per magazine.
