The Taurus TX22 turned out to be a sleeper hit after its 2019 launch. Like so many others, I was pleasantly surprised by the TX22 when I finally got one.
It’s reliable, accurate, mimics a duty-sized gun with a 16-round capacity, and is an absolute blast to shoot.

Taurus has now turned the TX22 into a full family of firearms with various models. Their popularity and affordability have created a massive aftermarket for them.
So that begs the question, what can we do to make the TX22 even better?

How We Chose The Best TX22 Upgrades
When considering upgrades for the TX22, the best approach is to decide what you want the gun to do and go from there.
I feel like most people will use the TX22 for one of the following three things:
- A solid plinker or a purely fun gun used to turn .22LR into noise.
- Using it as a cheap training pistol or a tool to help teach new shooters.
- Turning it into a competitive pistol for use in sports like Steel Challenge.
My picks were based on how we can make the TX22 better at these three tasks. Not every pick applies to every task, but several are cross-compatible.

Pros
- Flat-faced design is comfortable
- Non-slip texture
- Adjustable
Cons
- Not the easiest to install
- Deactivation of the trigger safety and striker block safety makes it not suitable for carry
For an affordable pistol, the TX22 trigger isn’t bad, but it’s not match-grade. Like most guns, the TX22 could use a trigger upgrade.
TANDEMKROSS is one of the go-to companies for aftermarket parts for .22LR pistols, including the popular TX22.
Their Victory Trigger is an aluminum flat-faced design with an aggressive no-slip grip texture. The TANDEMKROSS trigger can be adjusted for pre- and post-travel.

Swapping TX22 triggers isn’t as easy as a Glock, but the instructions are easy to follow, and you can upgrade your gun quickly.
However, the Victory Trigger will deactivate the trigger and striker block safeties. This makes it more of a race-gun trigger rather than a carry or working-gun trigger.
2. TANDEMKROSS Eagle’s Talon Extractor – Best Durability Upgrade

Pros
- Cheap
- Increases the lifespan of the gun
Cons
- Has a more involved installation process
If you are anything like me, you’re going to shoot your TX22 a lot. When you make something that’s both cheap to shoot and fun to shoot, high-volume shooting is going to be expected.
One of the more common wear parts on the TX22 is the extractor. When the extractor fails, you’ll start experiencing malfunctions. If that happens, or you want to prevent it from happening, the TANDEMKROSS Eagle’s Talon Extractor is a cheap and efficient upgrade.

As the name describes, this is an aggressive extractor machined to tight tolerances. It’s tough and made from hardened tool steel to extend its lifespan. For less than $20, you can improve the reliability of your TX22 over the many thousands of rounds you plan to shoot from it.

Pros
- Reasonably priced
- Top-loading battery
- Shake-awake technology
Cons
- Visible notch filter (blue tint)
The TX22 isn’t an expensive gun, so I’m not going to advocate for a $300 red dot. For most people, the TX22 is a plinker or a cheap trainer.
With that in mind, I like the Cyelee CAT0 red dot.
The CAT0 retails for around $150, and it’s pretty darn good for that price. This optic uses an RMSc footprint and features 8 daylight settings and 2 night vision settings.

It has two large buttons for controls, a top-loading battery, and shake-awake technology.
It may not be fancy, but it doesn’t need to be on a TX22. The CAT0 holds zero, can take some falls and bumps, and will certainly resist the G-forces of a rimfire pistol slide.
I’ve used the CAT0 as my dedicated review optic for any gun with an RMSc footprint, and it’s yet to let me down. It is a great budget optic for a great budget pistol.

Pros
- Makes Gen 1 TX22s optics ready
- Properly weighted for optics
- Multiple color options
Cons
- Not a drop in install
If you own a Gen 1 TX22 like me, you likely feel like you’re missing out on the optics mounting capability of the newer models.
Most of my guns have optics these days, and I want my training gun to have one too.
Fortunately, Lakeline LLC produces an optics-ready slide for Gen 1 TX22s. The sight footprint is the classic RMSc, but removable pins allow mounting Holosun K optics as well.

Blowback-operated .22LRs can be weight-sensitive, and the TX22 is no different. To ensure the weight remains a non-issue, the Lakeline slide features a few strategic cuts to reduce weight and ensure reliability.
These slides come in a variety of Cerakoted colors, so you can take customization a step further. They even made an integrally compensated slide for the Gen 1 guns if you want to go full race gun.
While it isn’t a difficult install, you will have to remove and reinstall the breech block, which requires a roll-pin punch.

Pros
- Comes in a two-pack
- Makes reloads easier
- Easy to install
- Affordable
Cons
- OEM 22-round mags aren’t that much more expensive
What’s better than 16 rounds of .22LR in a magazine? How about 21 rounds?
The TANDEMKROSS Wingman bumpers are +5 magazine extensions to help make the fun last even longer.
You can definitely buy OEM 22-round magazines for Taurus, but for the same price, you can get two Wingman bumpers for the magazines you already have. The Wingman Bumpers work on both standard and compact magazines.

The Wingman Bumpers come with the new magazine spring, so all you need is the magazine body and the follower.
The bumpers install with ease and make the magazine slightly longer. In my experience, the base pads also give you more grip, making reloads easier.

Pros
- User-serviceable
- Great decibel reduction
- Configurable into 4 different lengths
Cons
- Requires NFA paperwork
- May require certain ammo to cycle 100% reliably
A semi-automatic .22LR might be one of the most fun guns to suppress, and the TX22 suppresses quite well with the right ammo. That said, which suppressor is best for the TX22?
I rarely buy a suppressor for a single gun. The NFA paperwork, the suppressor cost, and the wait time mean I want to get the best bang for my buck. And for .22LR, the SilencerCo Switchback is my go-to.
The Switchback is a modular suppressor that can be set up in four configurations — long, medium, short, and rifle-optimized.

For a handgun, you can run it anyway you want, but the medium and short configurations keep things nicely balanced.
The Switchback is titanium and stainless steel. It’s full-auto rated, and outside of .22LR, it can handle .22 Magnum, .22 Hornet, and 5.7x28mm.

Pros
- Increases stability
- No permanent modification required
- Has brace and forend customization options
- Works with all models except compact
Cons
- Can be as expensive as the gun itself
If you want to get a little crazy, the FarrowTech FX22 PDW kit can turn your TX22 into a space-age, braced PDW while still legally maintaining its pistol status.
The kits are high-quality 3D printed chassis that are reinforced with metal parts where necessary. I’ve got a similar kit on a KelTec and absolutely love it.
The brace extends and closes, and FarrowTech offers both polymer and aluminum brace options.

Up front, you can pick between a magazine holder, a 10-degree angled grip, or a Picatinny rail. You also get a long rail across the top for adding optics and other accessories.
Have a suppressor for your TX22? No worries, the FX22 PDW kit is compatible with cans!
With that said, some of the FX22 configurations cost more than the gun itself, so keep that in mind.
8. Freedom Finger Triggers TX22 FRT – Best TX22 FRT

Pros
- Increases rate of fire significantly
- No permanent modification required
- No fitting required
Cons
- Not legal in all states
Forced reset triggers (FRTs) have surged in popularity recently, and with the advent of FRTs for the TX22, the gun itself has seen a huge boost in sales over the past few months.
When you pull a semi-auto trigger, you have to release pressure for it to reset to fire the next round. For those unfamiliar, an FRT forces the trigger to reset back into your finger. Just apply pressure, and the gun fires, resets, and your finger will fire it again.
The end result is a much faster rate of semi-auto fire. The TX22 has a very fast cyclic rate, and a good FRT can turn it into a pure bullet hose. Check it out for yourself in the short video below from 22plinkster.
The Freedom Fingers TX22 FRT is one of the most popular and reliable FRTs on the market. It is a simple drop-in part that replaces the factory disconnector and requires no other modifications.
These are absurdly fun, and you can easily revert your gun to semi-auto with the original parts if you so wish.
Sadly, depending on what state you live in, you might not be able to own an FRT. Always check the legality of FRTs in your state before purchasing one.
Final Thoughts
The TX22 is a fantastic firearm. It’s better than it has any right to be at its price point. Yet, the urge to tinker on an already great firearm still calls to many of us.

Luckily, there is a robust aftermarket that seems to be growing as the TX22 becomes more popular, and it is a buyer’s market for upgrades.

What ammo are you having the most success? I am using Remington Golden Bullet.
I got mine from Wise Arms for 19.99 and I love it. I want to get another TX22 so I do not have to swap back and forth. It is a fun toy.
The FarrowTech FX22 PDW Kit is soooo fun! Shoots like a charm. Great article and easy read
Good article. I like it in .22 the best, mainly because it's cheap and fun to shoot.
