If you haven’t gotten on the CZ bandwagon, you might want to start getting used to the idea.

The Czech company just released the CZ Duty, an all-new pistol with some eye-catching features.

I got to spend two days shooting the CZ Duty at the GunTalk facility in Louisiana prior to the launch, so I’ll give you all the facts and figures, as well as a few shooting impressions I picked up while I was there.

First things first. Where does the CZ Duty fall in the brand’s product lineup?

The Duty fills a gap that previously existed between the P-10 (starting MSRP $449), the P-09 Nocturne (starting MSRP $649), and the Shadow 2 (starting MSRP $1,599). It’s a heavy-duty pistol that offers more features than the P-10 without the eye-watering price of the Shadow 2.

CZ P10 C
Don't worry, the CZ Duty isn't replacing the P-10 C.

CZ lists an MSRP of $729 for the Duty.

The heart of this pistol is a serialized trigger group. Like the Springfield Echelon and various Sig Sauer pistols, this lets owners mix and match grip modules and slides without going through an FFL.

At launch, there are a total of 12 grip modules. These come in two capacities: Compact (with 15-round flush magazines and 17-round extended mags) and Full (with 17-round flush mags and 19-round extended mags).

Each capacity is available in three sizes: small, medium, and large. Not only do those grip modules offer different grip circumferences, they also differ in the distance from the backstrap to the trigger to accommodate different hand sizes. I can’t wait for aftermarket manufacturers to start producing their own grip modules.

Finally, each of those six grip modules is available with or without a manual safety. The Duty already comes with three safeties (trigger, drop, and out-of-battery), but some consumers and government organizations require a thumb safety. The Duty checks that box.

The manual safety is optional, and comes in addition to the three internal safeties.

CZ’s new optic mounting system uses interchangeable lugs rather than adapter plates, so you can mount your preferred optic directly to the slide. And yes, those are included when you buy the Duty. The only one you have to buy separately is an ACRO-style plate.

One of my favorite aspects of the Duty is CZ’s impressive testing gauntlet. The Duty was designed from the ground up for use with not standard, not +P, but +P+ ammunition. According to CZ, this pistol’s main parts have a lifetime of 25,000 rounds using only +P+ ammo, and no service is required until 10,000 rounds.

Testing also included light training ammo, heavy subsonic loads, full-metal jacket bullets, and various hollowpoint profiles. The Duty ate them all.

I’ll have a full review for you soon, but my initial shooting impressions were very positive. I shot this pistol until it was too hot to touch the slide. I ran drills, drew from IWB and OWB holsters, and shot targets as far as 100 yards out. I didn’t experience any malfunctions, and I don’t recall anyone else having issues, either.

So far, the CZ Duty looks like a real bruiser and a serious contender in the duty-pistol market.

  • I have been considering the CZ P09C Nocturne as a carry gun over my p365 xmacro. Even though the sig is more concealable, my bear paws have an easier time maintaining followup shots on the cz.

Having never shot the Shadow variants, how does the striker fire CZ Duty compare to the DA/SA Nocturne? Worth trading for?
