How We Tested the Best AR-15 Piston Uppers & Conversion Kits

For this article, we gathered a bunch of AR-15 piston uppers we've personally shot, reviewed, and owned here at Pew Pew Tactical. The entire Pew Pew Tactical team, as well as freelance writers, contributed to this review to offer different opinions based on ergonomics, size, and experience.

PWS MK116 Mod 2-M Testing
Testing the PWS MK116 Mod 2-M for accuracy.

Every review rifle undergoes 500 rounds of practice ammo and heavier match-grade ammo at 50 and 100 yards with a 5-25x scope (unless otherwise noted). We require all AR-15s to be tested with at least 3 magazines to assess compatibility, and we use a Lyman Digital Trigger Gauge to measure the average trigger pull for all guns.

When the apocalypse has come, and you’re digging through the local gun store to try and build something that will help you survive the wasteland that our world has become, the Primary Weapons Systems MK116 MOD 2-M is what you should be looking for.

All kidding aside, PWS has made what I consider one of the very best drop-in, no-fuss, shoot-all-day, piston-driven uppers on the market today. The company is an industry standard and a common recommendation for all the right reasons.

This upper has all the features I'd want, including the unabashedly cool PicLok System that allows you to use M-LOK and Picatinny attachments. It also features a 1:8 twist barrel that's suitable for a wide range of bullet weights, a durable long-stroke piston, a Radian Raptor ambidextrous charging handle, and a muzzle brake.

The three-position adjustable gas system lets you fine-tune your AR, which is extra handy if you want to add a suppressor.

It also has a forged 7075 aluminum upper receiver, making it both stronger and lighter than a lot of billet receivers.

PWS rifles are known for their accuracy, quality, and reliability in the world of piston guns. If you are looking for a universal recommendation, this is about as close as you are gonna get -- and it's one heck of a shooter.

The Patriot Ordnance Factory P415 Edge delivers a ton of features at a surprisingly affordable price.

This piston upper sports a soft-shooting short-stroke piston, nitride heat-treated barrel, heat sink barrel nut, roller-cam pin bolt-carrier group, user-adjustable gas system, muzzle brake, 14.5-inch M-LOK rail with QD sling points, and POF's patented E2 extraction technology. Those are all really nice upgrades that you won't have to buy later on.

This animation shows how the E2 extraction design uses expanding gas to help dislodge the spent case. Bottom line: you're less likely to experience a malfunction.

POF has been refining the Edge platform since 2002. The result is a rock-solid upper that's loaded with high-end features out of the box.

Without a doubt, LWRC makes some of the best AR-15 piston uppers in the business, and the IC-SPR upper is a prime example of top-tier manufacturing.

The IC-SPR upper uses LWRC's patented short-stroke piston for reduced recoil and unflinching reliability. The 16.1-inch heavy-contour barrel NiCorr-treated, cold-hammer forged, and fluted. A nickel-boron bolt carrier group, modular rail system, ambidextrous QD sling mounts, ambidextrous charging handle, and iron sights round out a complete package.

All of the materials used by LWRC are meant to survive the harshest conditions while reducing wear and tear. If you want an absolute top-of-the-line piston-upper (and have the cash to afford one), LWRC is hard to beat.

I love Superlative Arm's adjustable gas block. In fact, it's the only one that I use now.

While I haven't tried out their entire piston system yet, I am eager to give it a shot due to it having the same rave reviews as their renowned direct impingement gas blocks.

I also appreciate how you can easily find the different gas lengths for the Superlative, as well as pencil barrel sizes in stock.

How to Pick the Best AR-15 Upper or Conversion Kit

In addition to choosing the best AR-15 piston upper for your needs, it's also helpful to consider why you'd want a piston system instead of a more common direct impingement system in the first place.

Here are the basic advantages and disadvantages.

Where does that dirty gas go?

With a piston AR, you'll get a small amount of powder fouling in a contained area around the piston face. As gas pushes the piston rearward, the bolt cycles with energy from a clean metal rod connected to the piston.

A direct impingement AR-15 sprays all that hot exhaust gas and powder residue straight back into the breech to force the bolt to cycle.

This means all that crud and junk from firing winds up all over your lower receiver, including the chamber and bolt carrier group, making for a much dirtier firearm. This means more frequent and tedious cleaning is required.

Heat Displacement

Every firearm gets hot, and that includes your AR-15.

You can actually mitigate some of that heat buildup with a piston system, though. It makes sense, right? Keeping all that hot gas out of the lower receiver will make everything run cooler.

Cost

Piston systems are more complicated than the simple tube of a DI system, so they’re naturally more expensive.

Some of these upper receivers cost as much as a fully-kitted direct impingement gun. But, for some people, that’s okay.

Compatibility

Sourcing parts for an AR-15 piston upper can be a bear. Piston systems aren't necessarily standardized like direct impingement systems.

Weight Distribution

Since piston systems place more material above the barrel, a piston AR-15 can feel relatively front-heavy. I haven't found this to be a meaningful hindrance, but it's something to think about, especially if you want to build a lightweight AR-15.

Final Thoughts

If you don't mind the inherent drawbacks, investing in an AR-15 piston upper can definitely mitigate heat buildup and make your post-range-session cleaning ritual significantly easier.
