Pew Pew Meter

Editor’s Note: Mossberg set out to deliver a feature-rich bolt-action rifle at a reasonable price, and they did just that. With features like detachable box magazines, a spiral fluted bolt, a recessed match barrel crown, and a patented LBA user-adjustable trigger, the Patriot offers a lot of value.

By The Numbers

Accuracy
Accuracy seems to vary by caliber and specific model. Overall, they group well-enough for hunting, but aren't tack drivers.
Reliability
The box magazines feed reliably. Some initial grit in the bolt may make cycling harder, but some lube and elbow grease will ensure full function.
Customization
Standard fare here. A handful of stocks, muzzle devices, and scopes are what you will be looking at.
Ergonomics
The straight comb stock works well and the gun fills the hand nicely. The bolt could feel a bit smoother for my tastes.

FINAL VERDICT

"Mossberg might not be the first company that comes to mind when it comes to bolt-actions, but they have been doing it for a while now. The Patriot offers a pretty solid feature set, which includes a nice user-adjustable trigger that is reminiscent of the Savage Accutrigger. The overall fitment and feel is nothing to write home about, but these rifles are priced accordingly and are still well put together. One of the greatest strengths of the Patriot is the wide caliber selection at its price point. I was able to pick up a walnut-stocked Patriot in .375 Ruger for under $400. If you just want to dip your toes into a neat hunting caliber, these rifles are great for that." - Wyatt Sloan
