By The Numbers

Accuracy
With the correct ammo, you can stack most of your shots on top of each other.
Reliability
The 686 is a long-proven design with a strong track record for reliability when left stock.
Customization
You can get grips, a few different sight options, and a some internal parts. Anything else will require custom gunsmithing.
Ergonomics
The stock rubber finger groove grips will either fit you or they wont. This can be easily remedied with a new set of grips if they don't work for you.

FINAL VERDICT

The Smith & Wesson 686 is, in my opinion, the de-facto medium-frame magnum revolver. Ever since its introduction, it has been known for its balance, accuracy, and like most S&W revolvers, its good trigger. Of course, the classic 686 vs. Colt Python argument has and always will be around, but the fact that the base model 686 is notably less expensive and has managed to go head-to-head with Colt's flagship revolver speaks volumes to me. If you want a great shooter without spending too much money, look no further.
