Editor’s Note: The Kel-Tec SU16B is a unique rifle in that it is a 5.56 rifle with a folding stock, making for an extremely compact overall package when stored. The SU16B model is ultra-lightweight, weighing only 4.5 lbs, further solidifying its role as a versatile utility rifle. While it may not be as accurate or reliable as an AR-15, we consider the SU16B an interesting alternative for specific use cases.

By The Numbers

Accuracy
The guns unwillingness to work or group well with heavier grain ammunition is a bit of a disappointment. Accuracy is reasonable with standard weight ammo.
Reliability
Ours ran 55 grain steel and brass case ammo with no issue. It did struggle to cycle 75 grain ammo.
Customization
While it has a Picatinny rail up top for optics and limited accessories, the trigger is proprietary and the handguard and stock aren't really changeable.
Ergonomics
The safety could be improved, and the bipod doesn't work that well. Aside from that, the rest of the controls are well-placed and the gun feels great in the hands.
Value
For around the $650 mark, you aren't likely to find another piston-operated, folding 5.56 rifle.
